Moving Out
When it comes time to move to a new home or apartment, most people direct most of their energy towards the process of moving in, but forget about what needs to be done when moving out. Though most of the stuff is intertwined, there are some things that you need to do with your old residence that you may not be thinking of. If you get that stuff under control, you are more likely to have a happy landlord who wants to return your security deposit, and all of your lose ends will be tied up.
When moving out, you have to think about garbage disposal. You may have the cleanest house in the world, but I can guarantee you are going to have more to throw away than you ever thought. You are going to find stuff packed away that you just don?t need any longer, and you may even want to get rid of your furniture to have a new start in your new home. These are common things when moving out of an old place and into a new one, so make sure you make arrangements for someone to pick up and dispose of the things that you no longer want or need.
You also have to consider the condition of the unit or home when moving out. You don?t want to leave behind holes in the wall, and you want to make sure anything that may have been your fault is fixed. You may even want to make things easier on yourself when moving out by painting. If you have been in your place for a while, a fresh coat of paint will almost guarantee you get your security deposit back, as long as there are no other damages. Not only have you saved your landlord the expense of painting, you have saved them the time needed as well. Just make sure you find out what color they would prefer, and in most cases, you can?t go wrong with white. Landlords seem to love it.
If you had the foresight to write down and photograph any problems with the house or apartment before you moved in, make sure you go over that list and then make sure anything else is taken care of. Make sure you clean, and do a good job. Offer to walk through the apartment with your landlord right after moving out to go over everything. If there is a problem, you have a chance to talk about it, or make plans to do something about it. They have a limited amount of time to give you back your money or give you a reason why they are not. If you walk through with them, they can?t really surprise you once you are done moving out and awaiting the return of your deposit.
