A year ago I lost the job that I had been working for seventeen years. I could no longer work with the woman that was my supervisor. She had never held the job that I did and she had unrealistic expectations of what could be accomplished in a day. I knew that I was not happy and that I needed a change, but when I was given an ultimatum and chose to resign I was suddenly left without a job for the first time since I was sixteen years old.
I had three months of pay coming so I took my time in making plans for the future. I wanted a career change. I have great people skills and I am very organized. I thought about a job in human resources. One day when I was working on the computer I came across a website for internet businesses. I was intrigued by the idea so I filled out a form to receive additional information. I could not believe the number of emails and telephone calls that I began to receive based on filling out that form. Most of the internet businesses that contacted me were selling ideas or information. They wanted me to pay money up front to find out what their business was. Many of the internet businesses had these sales pitches about making thousands of dollars a day for doing little or nothing. It was one of those situations where I new that everything sounded way too good to be true.
One day I received a call from a woman in Canada who represented a company. The company was product based and she wanted me to look at a website to learn more about the company. The approach was so different I went to the website and liked what I saw. Unlike the other internet businesses this company had real products and was not promising over night success. They emphasized that it would take work to get the business off the ground, but that there would be a great deal of support from fellow business owners. I was surprised when I asked the woman from Canada how much it would cast me to be involved in the internet businesses. She told me that she first needed to interview me to see if I was a good fit with the company. All the other businesses wanted you money first and did not care if you were a good match or not. I have been involved with this company for four months and my business is beginning to grow. I am now calling people that have filled out forms like I did. There are so many people that no longer believe in internet businesses and so I have to do a great deal of listening in order to prove that our company is different.
