lucky numbers 19 by Publication Critique

I was in my early teens when our state joined the multi state lottery. I remember what a hot topic it was among the adults. People were sure that participation in such an activity was going to corrupt anyone that took part in it. My grandfather was very outspoken about the subject. He thought that people would bet so much that they would lose their homes. The funny thing was that grandma played the lottery twice a week from the time it started until she died.

Grandma had her lucky numbers that she would play every week. While grandpa was still alive she would get someone else to buy the tickets for her. She always chose the same lucky numbers to be drawn. Some times she would win a few dollars because some of the numbers would be called. Once when I was visiting her during a semester break from college she asked me to go to the corner gas station and buy her a ticket. She carefully wrote down her lucky numbers and told me to make sure I gave them to the clerk in the order that she had them down. I explained to grandma that when they print the ticket they put the numbers in numerical order. She said that she knew this, but she still thought it was important to tell the lucky numbers in her sequence to the clerk. I went and bought the ticket for grandma. When I gave the lucky numbers to the clerk she mentioned that I must be buying the ticket for my grandma. She said that she knew them by heart because grandma bought them there so often.

When I got back to grandma?s house I asked her where she came up with her lucky numbers. She showed me a small piece of paper that was from a fortune cookie. She said it was the first fortune cookie that she ever ate. The fortune said that she would grow old and would have abundance. On the bottom of the slip were several numbers that said these are your lucky numbers. Grandma said that shortly after eating that fortune cookie grandpa was hired by a company that he was trying to get into for several years. The new job meant a great deal more money for them. Then grandma found out she was pregnant with my dad, even though she had been told that she could not have children. My dad?s date of birth contained two of the lucky numbers on the list. She has held on to that fortune ever since. I found it interesting that she kept it in her bible. Grandma never one the big jackpot, but she kept hoping that each time the numbers were drawn, that hers would come up. She lived to be ninety one years old and left us a great deal of money. I guess her fortune came true after all.
