There are some items that deserve a special presentation. A shadow box can be the perfect vehicle for these precious objects. You can find an assortment of styles and designs that will suit any interior design. The display case is perfect for a number of items and following are three major categories of the shadow box.
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of a shadow box is the flag version that is used to house patriotic flags. My grandfather had a magnificent American flag dating back to World War II. He held on to the prized possession for many years but soon he was starting to see the affects of time on the material.
My grandmother was quick to find a shadow box to house his flag. The keepsake has been handed down to my uncle who proudly displays his father?s World War II flag right on his fireplace mantle. The memorial flag display is beautiful and it is a true family treasure that is also a great remembrance.
The flag shadow box is usually shaped like a triangle and the flag is perfectly fitted in the display case. This item sits well on a tabletop, mantel or shelf or it can be hung on a wall as well. This shadow box is offered in solid pine or oak wood and its face is constructed of clear glass.
In the same nature of the flag shadow box, the military version of this keepsake is also a great way to display patriotic family heirlooms. We also created a very different display for my grandfather that we presented to my grandmother after he departed. The military display is quite sentimental to my grandmother because they married back in 1945, right after the end of the war.
My grandfather earned a Purple Heart during his time overseas and he also collected several period items that fit perfectly in the shadow box. The items included a postcard with a one-cent stamp. The note on the card was a simple proposal of marriage after all of the fighting was over.
Many would argue that Grand pap?s military shadow box falls more into the final category; the display shadow box. However, the items are all relevant to World War II so I find it to be appropriately associated with the military presentation.
An example of a display shadow box is one that I have created to commemorate my daughter?s first visit to a photographer. I put the dress and booties that she wore on that day right along with the finished photograph. This is a great arrangement that I hope will be passed down from generation to generation as all items in a shadow box should.
